Micro Center has a smart plug on sale for $5.99. Checking into it a bit, the way it works is you buy the plug, then download their app, then register your plug, then get an integration for Alexa etc to talk to their plug.
I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand it seems bad that buying a smart product forces you to expose yourself to a new app and data collector .. but on the other maybe this is what it really takes to get devices registered for updates.
