I'll give TFT_eSPI a try tomorrow as well.
From what I read, TFT_eSPI can bettter saturate the SPI bus. We'll see.
Some of these displays also have a parallel interface. You can bitbang 8-bit or 16-bit data in one go. However, that's not necessarily faster. And it eats an entire CPU, which also means more current draw.
Hardware SPI + DMA "should" be more power efficient, with similar perf.
