I remember reading somewhere that in Plato's imagined republic, only the middle class would be permitted to vote.

The poor don't have the luxury of seeing the big picture, so they'll vote for whichever party promises them a steady home and regular meals, without consideration for the big picture.

Conversely, the rich are only concerned about hanging on to -- and preferably increasing -- their wealth, so they couldn't give a rats about the people less fortunate.

Only the middle class has the perspective to understand what the poor are going through, while also having the luxury of being able to balance that out with what's best for the country and economy in the long run.

I don't know if I heard correctly, but regardless, I think that almost kinda makes sense....
