Had to filter one of my favorite words today, "w*ird", because it has now become a term of opprobrium for people and ideas on the lunatic right, and the stream of posts using it is getting tiresome for me.
A small question: how long until those idiots claim it with pride? (Hint: my guess is not long.) I'd bet $10 that there's someone printing "W*IRD AND PROUD OF IT"/"T***P 2024" T-shirts already.
And then what, exactly? I'm not sure why calling their ideas what they are: cruel, un-Christian, unhinged, etc. isn't enough. THE. CRUELTY. IS. THE. POINT. And shouting THAT from the rooftops, should be the message, not that "they're w*ird".
Words have meanings, both in the connotative and denotative senses, and "w*ird" has long represented something inclusive and different for certain communities (e.g., "Keep Austin W*ird"). That's going to disappear, because some influential people have decided that that word is a good way to describe what the lunatic right is.
It's a weak word that between now and November will lose its impact. It's fun to use it now, I guess, but I'd remind people to think of what they're going to lose.
