The importance is how it relates personally for the main character. You get invested in them and how the plot messes up their life. I enjoyed Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series which was about the birth of England. But the series followed a warlord from boyhood to old age with his personal battles and conflicting emotions since he felt both Saxon and Dane. The creation of England was the backdrop for his personal story.
