"save in Bitcoin, spend in Monero"
is a perfectly sensible approach.
The only comment I would make is,
you don't want to just be moving into Monero just when you need to spend. It makes you vulnerable to timing analysis of the exchanges.
It's better to keep a stack that you top up occasionally.
