Wayland was initially designed for car infotainment systems, and this is where Weston is used today. Only afterwards someone had a brilliant idea of bolting a windowing system on top of this crap.
Libinput isn't really a problem, as Xorg uses it too and it's well-ported. The bigger problem is the reliance on dbus for many things, because dbus is an utter piece of garbage, always has been.
But the biggest problem with Wayland is the lack of a single extendable server implementation. There's like at least six and all of them are on par with Xorg in terms of sheer complexity and code size. Basically, instead of one kinda of crappy Xorg server we got six and they all suck in different ways. Fuck off this is stupid!
