What I've just described is the unit known as the "bel." Basically, a bel is an instruction to use logarithms to multiply or divide a number by something.
For example, -1 bel tells you to divide some number by 10. Similarly, -0.125 bel approximately tells you to multiply a number by ¾.
(Wikipedia claims that the name is in honor of Bell, of telephone fame.)
