For the very specific use case of gift cards as money to be spent on a single type of commodity from a single vendor, this is certainly a step in the right direction.
Personally, however, I'd rather just give someone some gas money, preferrably in BTC, then he can also buy flowers and chocolate at the gas station should he happen to be filling up on Valentine's day.
