It's called the Basin of Mexico, and that's were mexicans used to live, they came after the olmecs and gain power thanks to commerce in lake Texcoco, Spain conquered it and decided to keep the name Mexico and called it Reino de Mexico. That is why maps call it Golfo de Mexico, it used to belong to Spain and the Reino de Mexico and they decided how to called it. Now, do you think it should be called Gulf of Mexico or Gulf of America? What about Persian gulf or Arabian gulf?
