If you don't have equality before the law, what do you have? It's been the driving force of history since 1066 (yes, 1066). The Norman-French made one set of laws for themselves, and another for the conquered English. It would take hundreds of years and many lives to uphold the idea and ideal, but it is still a driving force history, and always will be. Anything else is regressive and oppressive.
