CentOS is not dead, it's thriving. It's no longer just a RHEL clone, it's a distro in it's own right. This means the maintainers can finally fix bugs and accept contributions. Speaking of those maintainers, there are now several orders of magnitude more of them thanks to these changes. The tweak to the name just reflects that it is built differently now. It's common to see people still refer to it as CentOS, just like they did when the full name was CentOS Linux.
