I think this is actually a union mindset that isn't real. I'm not sure what industry you're in, but in the construction industry, even before I had my own business, I have always been paid more than similar union workers.

In fact, I was making more working for a private company painting than union electricians with electrical licenses. For employees who show up every day and do decent work, I have never experienced a situation in almost 15 years of working where I got paid less because I worked for private companies.

I find that this type of thinking or the "race to the bottom verbiage" is common among union guys, but I've never heard anyone who is non-union talk like this. I think it might be some indoctrination stuff or maybe it's a personality thing.

Public companies, sure, maybe, MAYBE there is a semblance of the race to the bottom mentality, but in many cases they simply outsource things to other countries. But public companies make up less than 1% of all businesses in the US and US jobs. I'd argue most small business owners will actually pay more than unions will for the same employees - at least that's been my experience.

If you're comparing Walmart jobs vs like an Amazon Warehouse job, then yah, i guess in those situations its a race to the bottom and unions are nice, but by the same token, these are also very, very low skill positions. Any position which requires a specialty skill is likely better off in the open market because if people pay too low of wages, they won't be able to retain workers.
