The processes that control what external genitalia you end up with are — technically speaking — EXTREMELY FUCKING COMPLEX. The XX/XY stuff we teach everybody in middle school is kinda like Newtonian physics or the classic spherical cow of uniform density — a simplification useful for teaching young people and completely broken for complicated real world applications.
