Yes this is what my thoughts are behind Bluesky's protocol.
ActivityPub is perfectly fine as a protocol, yes more features could be added and they are being worked on with things like the ability to actually take all of your posts when you migrate.
Features such as Authenticating and Signed API calls could probably be on their way, but I am unsure.
In the end it's like reinventing the wheel instead of just taking the original one and adding to it.
