Modern conservatism in the US isn't simply about applying the brakes to progress to maintain the status quo. Maybe it was about that once upon a time, but not any more. Modern conservatism is about regressing society, to undermine the progress we've made and restore us to an imagined golden age where they had all the power and money and everyone meekly submitted to them.
That is the opposite of progress, called regression. They're not conservatives, they're regressives.
