I like artificial ones with quills that to inject deadly toxins (in some nails) and non-lethal paralysing toxins (on other nails, you can choose which to employ) produced by bioengineered glands installed at the base of the nails. I've read about that idea in this book called Midnight at the Well of Souls which was a pretty good book. Very imaginative.
