I think I've mentioned that I lived in Nome from 1998-2001 and worked for The Nome Nugget and covered The Iditarod sled dog race and local politics. The first year I covered the Iditarod, my cousin came up to visit. One of the mushers was Dr. Sonny King, a veterinarian from South Carolina, which is where my cousin and I are from. Here is a photo of Sonny King leading his dogs to the burled arch finish line on Front St. in Nome and my cousin is "driving" the sled. These were some of the best years of my life! Living in Nome was a dream come true, but getting to cover The Last Great Race was friggin' AWESOME! This photo was taken by an AP photographer whose name I have forgotten.
