This way of thinking, with religious underpinnings, is deeply embedded in US white Christianity with its myth of American exceptionalism. From the inception of the nation, there was a need to view denigrated others — native Americans, African Americans — as the evil other that demonstrates how good we, the holy and righteous (the white), are.
The war Johnson and his followers have mounted against LGBTQ people is part and parcel of this mentality.
