/64 is an incomprehensibly large amount of addresses. The limitation on further divisions was made (as far as I could gather, correct me on this) to protect the inet from repeating IPv4’s mistakes - NAT et all.

but the world isn’t all pretty and uniform, and it pains me a lot that /80 or /96 will be only recognized as valid by certain pieces of software. When you want to actually play with networks, instead of being able to use the literal millions of addresses at your disposal, you need to do hacks, feel a lot of pain, and blame your ISP for not giving you a slightly bigger range. But it didn’t have to be this way…
