I'd recommend starting with the Hobbit first & holding off on The Silmarillion until last. Assuming you saw Jackson's movies, while LotRs was well done he was forced to drop all of the nuances and side adventures and focus only on the parts of the story that moved the Ring forward. His version of The Hobbit, on the other hand, was bloated fan fiction and was nothing like the fast paced romp the book was.
