My problem with Cohost's funding is that I question the point? Sure, the intentions of a relatively independent social media site are noble, but is it really a good use of people's resources?
Mastodon and the wider fediverse just work thanks to its decentralised nature. People host servers, maybe from an old computer lying around at first, and eventually by pooling funds from their community. It's open source, so everyone can help make it more efficient in terms of computing resources etc.
There is a massive userbase of fediverse who are way more active on it than Cohost is, and it's all mostly running fine just thanks to communities organising their own social space, and isn't that the ideal model for how the internet should work?
Meanwhile Cohost is begging people to take *multiple* cohost subscriptions because they're still not profitable, while having 130k total users and 12k MAU with $46k of monthly expenses. That's about 4$ per active user per month of running cost.
