Fair point. I have no strong attachment to the idea that they wandered for 40 years. I will say that if you're following a pillar of smoke which, to me, seems like a tornado. If tornados are your GPS, I can see how one might get lost for at least a little while though.

Also, I should add that, from what I've heard, Moses spent like a year up on Mt. Sinai or something like that. It was a while I think. It wasn't like he went up there in the morning and came down later that afternoon and the people had started worshipping the Golden Bull in that time.

By the way, I think that Golden Bull reference may be symbolic of "imbalance towards the Divine Masculine", i.e. a lack of receptivity.

If they rejected his 10 commandments, perhaps he felt like they were not being receptive and described it as worship of the bull which is symbolic of the Divine Masculine.
