The U.S. is witnessing a considerable growth in strike activity
==========

The annual Labour Action Tracker (LAT) report from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) at Cornell University shows a significant growth in strike activity in the United States. The LAT has recorded a more than 77% growth in strikes across the American economy since its launch three years ago. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) only tracks work stoppages involving 1,000 or more workers, leaving most strike action uncounted. According to the LAT report, there were 470 work stoppages in 2023, with approximately 539,000 American workers going on strike. The LAT also recorded 24,874,522 strike days in 2023, an increase of 459% from the previous year. The report highlights the decline in strikes by non-union workers and the growth in work stoppages involving demands for a first union contract. The United Auto Workers, Kaiser Permanente, the Los Angeles teachers' union, and actors' and writers' unions accounted for a large portion of the strike activity in 2023. The report also notes that the three most common demands across strikes were better pay, improved health and safety, and increased staffing. In comparison, Canada recorded close to a third as many strikes and workers on strike as the U.S., despite having a considerably smaller workforce.
