I think the strongest defender of freedom within the United States, especially for his time in the face of tremendous opposition, might be Ulysses Grant who implemented Abraham Lincoln's policies and who historian Ron Chernow tried to rehabilitate in a 2017 biography. The abolitionist Frederick Douglass wrote, "To Grant, more than any other man, the Negro owes his enfranchisement." At Grant's funeral Douglass said, “In him, the Negro found a protector, the Indian a friend, a vanquished foe a brother, an imperiled nation a savior.” In addition to defeating the Confederacy as leader of the Union troops in the U.S. Civil War, Grant signed into law the 15th Amendment, giving African Americans the right to vote and establishing the U.S. Department of Justice which he tasked with fighting the KKK and white supremacy.
