Pre-internet hacks I remember:
If you didn’t have money for a postage stamp, you could put the address you wanted to reach as the return address and dump it in a public mailbox. Only worked within the same city, but they would take it “back” to the return address as undeliverable.
In middle school my friends and I figured out we could make collect calls from one payphone to another. We memorized a bunch of payphone numbers near each others’ houses and this was how we would meet up to hang out.
