I'll answer this one for Ashrah because it fits perfectly. Her demonic species is genderless. When she visited Indonesia and was enchanted by the women dancing jaipong, she did so because they looked free and joyful, two things she never felt. That's why she based her second skin on them, but she had no notion of gender.
In Book 2, she learns more about gender, but she never quite considers herself one or the other.
