The reason I use the indexing is that it makes a lot of other code easier to write correctly — it doesn't really ensure correctness of course, but it prevents me from making certain mistakes. Combined with the way that the index is often an implicit parameter to various functions, it makes it easy to *always* call functions with the correct index; defining the 'quotation' function from NbE is a good example of this.
