A comment about ancient societies: inequality was limited by production. You cannot starve to death your peasants or you lose your income, so there is a limit in how much the top 1% can get out of the lower 99% and avoid mass starvation. So the fact that the roman empire was more "equal" than the han empire is probably due to highr productivity in the Han empire that leads to more excess production above the starvation line.
