I think both approaches are valid. I've seen people apply that philosophy and just not try hard enough. Example: I'm walking to the bus stop with my friends and the bus passes beside us. I run as fast as possible as my friends say "it's not worth it. We missed it already" and I catch it time. Another example: in my programming job the power sometimes goes out, and everyone is like "there is nothing we can do now" instead of actually trying as hard as possible not to be stopped by that.
