today i found a praying mantis sitting on my truck's windshield while i was driving. it got me thinking. does the mantis understand the situation it's in? does it know that the surface its on, is made of superheated sand. that it's only a few feet away from enormous explosions that could decimate it without remorse. that with a simple flick of my finger i could sentence him to death by moving the windshield wiper. it does not know any of this nor could it ever. but it does not panic. it did not jump off. it sat for a while, moved around every so often. regardless of my speed. it was along for the ride. and while i looked away for a moment, an unexpected blout of wind blew it away, never to be seen again. but, in my heart i know he's still out there. just hanging on somewhere for the ride. living on a prayer. we're halfway there.
