In the early 1890s, after Ferdinand Theinhardt had retired, his former foundry charged 60 Pfennig per letter in punchcutting costs for “custom typefaces.”

That was likely comparable to other Berlin foundries’ prices.

1890s currency conversion is difficult but, at that time, Berlin university students working on research projects were paid 60 Pfennig per hour!

Virtually no punch could have been cut that quickly, so this says something about how little punchcutter labor was valued then.
