Same here, very boring. He's always been considered an especially literary writer of SF, which is typically a very polarizing thing to be.

My favorite of his was "The Years of Rice and Salt" (2002), although I can't say that others would like it. It's just alternate history, which isn't *very* science-fictiony. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Years_of_Rice_and_Salt

I used to go to a tiny conference where I heard him speak several times on non-fictional subjects related to SF. *That* was pretty interesting, and he's quite erudite.
