Party primaries are run by the party, not the government so there's no law against them pulling all sorts of chicanery to force a candidate (just ask Bernie).
Though you are right that they have very little time left before states have deadlines on who to put on their ballots. This means that if a switch were to happen, it would have to happen fast and with somebody who can inspire confidence in the nation and has been tested in even the toughest of hog-cranking battlefields. 🌭
