I'd say that older somewhat default partition layouts made the rootfs small and had a separate large /usr. Thus you might run out of storage on those machines because of too small rootfs. Furthermore it becomes more annoying to put everything into an immutable bundle because suddenly you have multiple paths you need to deal with.
