I'm (regrettably) in the USA. Today I had a farewell lunch/dinner with my queer dear friend across the street before I move out of the area. My close friend is non-binary, and their wife is a trans woman.
My close friend said that they have had to hole up in their home the last few months. For my friend, they might be able to pass for one gender or another. But for their wife, she wouldn't. They are very afraid for what could happen to them if they appear in public.
This is the same couple that proudly had a pride flag adorning their home just last year.
These are very real-life struggles queer families are facing in conservative towns/cities. I'm lucky I'm moving to a city that is purple or purple-adjacent, where I don't have to fear the neighbors quite so much.
