To tell you the truth, I don't know, we just got used to the smells the permeated the subway system. The burning flesh, the other fumes from the fires, then the smell of the ash.
I worked the #1 line which did go right under the WTC, we ended up being diverted to Brooklyn for a year and using tracks and stations just a few blocks away, so it just became part of life.
