My MIL has this horrible habit of doing "nice things" to make her insufferable behavior almost sufferable, and if you tell her to please stop the thing she's doing, she'll weaponize all the things she has done for you as some weird defense. She would also say "nice things" about people in a blatant passive aggressive way, then totally bash them when they are gone.
