No, not in a planned-out way.
I guess I believe that if I write a rich story, some events may end up foreshadowing others, but I don't plan that, and the same with symbols. The characters may notice things--may look at birds flying and think about freedom, say, because that's the sort of thing people do, but I don't decide I'm going to put birds into a story to symbolize freedom.
