I think eventually clients will be a lot smarter than they are now and will be doing a lot of connecting and disconnecting in the background that the user isn't necessarily aware of.

You may be connecting to 100's of different relays during a session but not all at the same time. As a user you may have only selected a handful of relays to send/receive with but your client will also know which relays your contacts interact with and will be periodically checking both those and your own preferred ones in the background, but again, not all at the same time.
