Btw, I've wondered for a while why the Israeli government might be so stupid to bite the hand that feeds it, strain its relationship with the UN, bully Western democracies that don't unconditionally support their cause, bang the ethnic/nationalistic drum so much, frantically dismantle its democratic and secular principles, and please so much its ultra-Orthodox base rather than the educated and liberal working force that has been the engine of its growth - tech companies that have made the fortune of Israeli's GDP in the past decade are leaving Tel Aviv in flocks, after months of protests against the illiberal turn of the government, and nobody who is in power seems to even bother to hold them back.
And the more I look at the problem, the more I see a simple answer.
Educated working women usually don't pop out 6-7 kids in their lifetime, like Haredi women (and even Palestinian women to some degree) do.
Arafat used to say that "the wombs of his women his best weapon against Israel". And now Israel has embraced the same weapon, to the point that more than a quarter of all Israeli population may be ultra-Orthodox by 2050 if the trajectory doesn't change.
That also explains decisions such as confining the swelling Palestinian population into a tiny strip of land more densely populated than Manhattan, dropping bombs on them whenever they have a chance.
When they inevitably end up murdering civilians in the hundreds/thousands, they can always use the "Hamas uses civilians as human shields" excuse.
Imagine if somebody regularly dropped bombs on Manhattan to allegedly target terrorists who live in skyscrapers, and say that the huge civilian tool is caused "by NYC's administration using civilians as human shields". Because that's exactly what's been happening in Gaza City, for years, under the tacit assent of the international community.
When you look at the problem from a demographic perspective, the crude, ugly and extremely lucid reality starts to emerge: Israel sees its struggle with the Palestinian as a demographic war, and the only way to win it is to maximize the growth rate of their population while minimizing the growth rate of its enemies. If they manage to do that, then the problem of a two-State solution, or a one-State-two-cultures, simply goes out of the window.
Such a strategy has multiple documented names in historic literature: apartheid, ethnic cleansing, ethnic replacement, genocide.
Pick your favourite name, but let's at least start to call things with their right name.
