Thinking for oneself despite social pressure can be difficult but it's immensely rewarding in the long run.
Hard-won principles are not easily compromised.
If I'd acquiesced to the "yeah but most people don't think that way, it's weird" I never would have discovered the beautiful and historic Reformed understanding of the Christian faith, never would have gone deep on Austrian econ, or (Natural Law-based) Libertarianism, non-interventionist foreign policy, the "food pyramid," the jibby-jab, so many other things. I may not be correct about everything, but I've at least examined and decided, I've done the work.
Shut your ears to the cowardly conformists. It may cost you, but hardened principles are the wages of deep study.
Know what you believe, and why you believe it. Have something firm to stand on.
