Fructose's role in NAFLD is well known. Obviously in the US HFCS is a big factor in this, but fruit breeding has resulted in fruits with much higher sugar and by extension fructose content. Wealth and globalisation increases the availability of these products year round. You don't consider fruit a processed food do you?
