I have a vague memory that they changed the dye composition while I was at school (because E-numbers?) and it worked perfectly one year and then failed miserably for half the colours the next.
You cut a thin tongue out of a circle of filter paper, dangle it in a glass of water and then balance the Smartie on top. I have no idea if it works with M&Ms, don’t they have some sort of lacquer on them?
