Mars is actually a hole in the cosmic background (you've heard of cosmic background radiation, haven't you?), which is the black sheet on which the stars are painted. When you look at Mars, you are looking THROUGH the background at a space beyond.
The same is true of other so-called planets. Saturn's rings are actually scaffolding that the builders of the Saturn-hole forgot to take down.
