it is an effective way to limit spam on my relay though, every time i mute, i know my relay blocks write access, every time i follow, i know that user, and whoever they follow, if available, can become part of the relay's whitelist

it's not about circle jerk, it's about propriety. i own my relay. i use mute and follow lists to control access to it, it's an interface in every client so except for a recent incident involving jumble defaulting to private follow/mute i know when i use those actions with my profile it changes my relay's allow list
