Google, in collaboration with researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence model called 'DolphinGemma', aimed at analyzing and understanding the communication patterns of dolphins, marking a scientific breakthrough in interspecies communication. The model relies on advanced AI technologies to decipher complex sounds emitted by Atlantic spotted dolphins, such as clicks, whistles, and fast pulses. The 'DolphinGemma' model was trained on a massive dataset of audio and behavioral recordings collected by the WDP since 1985, in the longest-running field research project under the sea, focusing on a specific dolphin community in the Bahamas. The intelligent analysis and predictive capabilities of the model enable scientists to discover recurring patterns and potentially understand the structure of dolphin language. The model can be run on Pixel smartphones, making it a practical and cost-effective solution for marine environments. The 'CHAT' system is open to researchers worldwide, and in conjunction with the development of the model, researchers are also working on an interactive system called 'CHAT', using artificial sounds linked to preferred items of dolphins, to test their ability to mimic the sounds to request items, paving the way for developing a shared linguistic system between humans and dolphins. Google has announced that it plans to release 'DolphinGemma' as an open model by summer 2025, to expand its use in studying other dolphin species and supporting research on intelligent marine life communication worldwide. This project represents a major step towards a deeper understanding of dolphin communication and reflects how AI technologies can contribute to unraveling the mysteries of marine life and bridging the gap between humans and nature.
