Mastodon is a wild experiment, and central to its premise is governance by individual instances which may set their own standards.
Some instances, for example, have decided to forego the standard 500 character cap.
I have never once received a reply of this sort which I have enjoyed, and I find the practice inconsiderate bordering on odious.
