“Money and language allow humans to cooperate at scale…Money is really just a ledger—initially an oral ledger. Then we start writing down who owes what to whom, and eventually we begin trading physical objects like gold or shells that have certain properties (scarcity, durability, portability). Without this, we couldn't scale trade with people we don’t know, don’t trust, and may never see again. And that’s incredibly useful—it’s what lets us specialize at things."
