A historic wave of protests has swept through Istanbul, with organizers claiming over 2.2 million people gathered at Maltepe Square to demand the release of arrested mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and call for early presidential elections.
Imamoglu, speaking through a written statement, thanked the 15 million people who voted for him in the CHP primaries, saying that his arrest had created a “unique opportunity” for the opposition to unite.
While official figures haven’t confirmed the protest size, organizers are now vowing to expand the actions nationwide.
